KUALA KRAI: Repair work on the collapsed bridge at Kampung Chatel Damai near Lata Rek, here, is set to begin by the end of this month.

Prime Minister’s Department Implementation Coordination Unit director Jasri Kasim said the repair works were an immediate measure to ensure the safety of residents, while the government evaluates the need to construct a concrete bridge as a long-term solution.

He said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ibrahim had ordered immediate action to be taken after being informed of the bridge collapse.

“Therefore, our priority now is to ensure the bridge is repaired and safe for use.

“That is why repair works on the collapsed bridge will commence by the end of this month,” he said.

Jasri said the repair works would involve replacing the steel cables and wooden deck at an estimated cost of RM400,000.

“Technical assessments found that the bridge’s basic structure, including the concrete anchor blocks holding the cables, remains intact and can continue to be used,” he added.

At the same time, Jasri said plans for the construction of a concrete bridge measuring about 50 metres in length, capable of accommodating all types of vehicles, would also be considered as a long-term solution, subject to the needs and wishes of the local community.

However, he acknowledged that the implementation of a concrete bridge would take longer due to planning procedures, cost assessments and land acquisition processes.

“The cost evaluation for the construction of a concrete bridge is higher and is currently being refined in collaboration with the District Land Office as well as the state Irrigation and Drainage Department,” he said.

It was reported that a festive wedding celebration turned chaotic after the bridge suddenly collapsed on Jan 2, causing more than 50 guests to fall into Sungai Chatel Damai in Lata Rek.

Lata Rek sub-district head Mohd Zaki Saari said the groom’s party from Pasir Puteh was leaving the venue when the incident occurred, while guests from the bride’s side had just arrived.

Following the collapse, funds have been allocated for the immediate replacement of the bridge, as directed by the prime minister.

In a statement on Jan 3, the Prime Minister’s Office said the move is aimed at ensuring public safety and convenience.
