SEREMBAN: The Works Ministry has estimated the cost of cleaning up six public buildings damaged by the storm in Telok Panglima Garang, Selangor, on Wednesday (Oct 15) at RM1.9mil.
Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the premises involved are SK Sijangkang Jaya, SK Kampung Medan, SRA Kampung Medan, SK Jalan Tanjung, Kampung Medan Kemas Pre-school, and the Sijangkang state constituency coordinator’s office.
He added that the preliminary cost estimate does not include repairs on damaged structures, and the actual cost will be revealed after receiving repair method recommendations from the structural forensic services division.
“A severe storm resulted in critical structural damage to six main premises, including schools and government offices. The Public Works Department (JKR) acted swiftly by inspecting the sites, closing high-risk areas, and preparing the initial report within 24 hours.
“Only with that report will we know what the temporary, medium- and long-term measures are. We are now focusing more on structural forensics evaluation and electrical safety before permanent repairs can start,” he said.
He told reporters this after officiating a groundbreaking ceremony for the first integrated electric vehicle (EV) charging hub in Malaysia at the Seremban (southbound) Rest and Service (RnR) area on Thursday (Oct 16).
On Wednesday, Nanta reported that the Selangor and Kuala Langat JKR are conducting structural inspections and safety assessments on several public buildings in Telok Panglima Garang, Selangor, damaged by the storm.
He said SK Sijangkang Jaya sustained roof damage and JKR advised the school authorities to suspend classes until the building’s structural safety could be determined.
Meanwhile, Nanta said no road maintenance work will be implemented on the routes involved throughout the hosting of the 47th Asean Summit this month, to ensure smooth traffic flow nationwide.
He stated that this will be implemented as per the directive issued for festive seasons to prevent traffic congestion and ensure road users enjoy a smooth journey, in addition to collaborating with the Malaysian Highway Authority and highway concessionaires.
“During festive seasons, we issue directives for road maintenance works to be halted to ensure smooth traffic flows. For the duration of the Asean Summit, the same directive will be issued because there will be lots of movements involving government officials and delegates,” he said. – Bernama
