A leader from the PAS non-Muslim supporters’ wing has called on party members to refrain from using terms like “kafir” (infidel) or “pendatang” (migrant) as such labels would offend non-Muslims.
The wing’s Selangor chief, K Deepakaran, claimed that a small number of members still resort to such name-calling, Malaysiakini reported.
He said party leaders should mind their language.
“They should avoid terms that can hurt a person’s feelings. Malaysians want politics that unite, not divide,” he was quoted as saying.
The last time a PAS member was reported to have used such terms was in 2024.
Zamri Zahari, who is said to be the head of the Bachok PAS division’s ulama wing, had labelled DAP members as “kafir harbi” (belligerent infidels).
He subsequently apologised for the remarks, admitting that he got carried away while acting as the emcee at an election ceramah.
PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang had infamously dubbed Umno a party of infidels in the 1980s.
