KUALA LUMPUR: Former national coach Kim Pan Gon has been appointed as Selangor‘s new manager, bringing a wealth of domestic knowledge to the club as they look to end a long silverware drought.
Selangor announced the South Korean’s appointment on Monday.
Pan Gon previously led Harimau Malaya from 2022, guiding the national team to their first Asian Cup qualification on merit in 43 years.
Under his guidance, Malaysia reached a 18-year high in the FIFA world rankings at No. 130, recording nine wins, seven draws, and nine defeats from 35 matches.
His tenure included a 3-3 draw against South Korea in Doha during the 2024 Asian Cup.
Pan Gon said his decision to join the Red Giants was driven by confidence in the club’s vision.
“My decision to join Selangor is based on my confidence in the club’s vision and commitment.
“Furthermore, the club’s targets and objectives align with my personal aspirations as a coach,” said Pan Gon.
The 56-year-old said his philosophy remains player-focused, built on preparation and collective responsibility.
“I emphasise high-quality training, clear tactical planning, and detailed opponent analysis to ensure the team is fully prepared,” he said.
Pan Gon also highlighted the importance of balancing experienced players with emerging talent, underlining discipline, professionalism, and unity as foundations for the team.
Selangor’s last major success was the 2015 Malaysia Cup.
Their most recent trophy was the 2025 Challenge Cup, a second-tier competition for teams eliminated in the Malaysia Cup round of 16.
Pan Gon joins Selangor after a successful stint in his home country where he led Ulsan HD FC to a third consecutive K League 1 title in 2024.
He also coached the Hong Kong national team and led South China AA to a league title in 2009.
