Police have arrested two men in connection with an incident where a group of motorcyclists were believed to have attacked two men travelling in a car on Jalan Sungai Isap, Kuantan.

Two videos of the incident then went viral on social media on Sunday (Aug 31).

Kuantan OCPD ACP Ashari Abu Samah said they received information about the event from the police operations room who discovered the video, in addition to a report made by a family member after the victim, who is in his 30s, received treatment at Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital.

“Following the report, two men in their 20s were arrested a day after the attack and are now on a four-day remand,” he said.

“The investigation is still ongoing to track down several other suspects involved, and we expect arrests to be made soon,” he said.

He spoke to reporters after the closing ceremony of the ‘Prevent Bullying Before It’s Too Late’ Town Hall organised by the Kuantan police at the Kuantan District Police Headquarters on Wednesday (Sept 3).

Earlier, a two-minute 19-second video went viral, showing the car carrying the victim hitting a motorcyclist at a junction before speeding away, while the fallen rider got back up.

Another video showed a group of men surrounding and attacking the victim’s car before police arrived to de-escalate the situation.

It is understood the altercation stemmed from the motorcyclists’ dissatisfaction with the accident that occurred earlier.

Elaborating further, ACP Ashari said the incident started around 2am and initial investigations found the victim and a male friend were in the car at the traffic light.

He explained that while entering the intersection, the car accidentally hit a motorcyclist before the driver sped away from the location.

“A group of motorcyclists then chased the car as the victim drove towards his workplace, less than 5km from the scene,” he said.

“The victim told me he stopped at a workshop and got out to resolve the matter amicably, but was attacked by a group of motorcyclists,” he said.

According to him, the victim suffered a broken little finger and bruises on several parts of his body from being beaten with helmets and wood.

“The victim’s friend was not injured because he was in the car during the incident,” he said.

“I was also informed that the victim has since been discharged from the hospital,” he added.

He also denied rumours that the victim was driving against traffic, causing the accident, adding that the case was being investigated under Section 326 of the Penal Code for causing grievous harm.
