Queen urges balance between technology and values at UTM convocation

JOHOR BARU: The rapid advance of knowledge and technology should be matched by moral development, says Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah, Queen of Malaysia.

Her Majesty, who is also Universiti Teknologi Malaysia’s chancellor, said that in today’s fast-paced world, information sometimes moves faster than wisdom.

“In an era of rapidly advancing technology and artificial intelligence, we must ensure that progress in knowledge is matched by progress in character.

“The generation we are shaping, whether at kindergarten, primary, secondary or university level, must not only be equipped with knowledge and skills but also nurtured with noble values.

“Those of us who are older carry the responsibility of guiding this young generation. Therefore, we must possess both knowledge and good conduct so that we can serve as examples and provide guidance to our youth and children,” she said.

Her Majesty made these remarks during Universiti Teknologi Malaysia’s 69th graduation ceremony on Saturday (Nov 15) here.

She added that good character does not emerge from rules alone but through role modelling, compassion and mutual respect.

“I hope that the recent incidents that have shocked the nation serve as lessons for all of us; every party must work together to ensure that such things do not happen again in the future,” she said.

Meanwhile, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia vice-chancellor Prof Dr Mohd Shafry Mohd Rahim said a total of 7,156 graduates will receive their degrees during the 69th convocation ceremony, which will take place over six days from Nov 15 to 20.

“This convocation comprises 11 award sessions, with 732 recipients of Doctor of Philosophy degrees, followed by 1,476 Master’s degree graduates, 4,233 Bachelor’s degree graduates, 658 Diploma graduates and 57 Executive Diploma recipients.

“Of the total, 1,195 are international graduates from 57 countries. To date, we have produced 238,993 graduates, including 13,645 international graduates representing more than 100 countries,” he said.
