Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said Russian president Vladimir Putin is “seriously considering” visiting Malaysia.
“President Putin met me in Beijing and said he is seriously considering coming,” Anwar said at AmBank’s 50th anniversary celebration.
However, Anwar did not provide a timeline for Putin’s proposed visit.
Anwar and Putin were among the world leaders in Beijing earlier this month for China‘s Victory Day parade to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.
Anwar met Putin during a visit to Moscow in May, during which he described Russia as a “great friend of Malaysia”. Anwar also visited Russia last September.
Putin has visited Malaysia three times, twice in 2003 and once in 2005, when he attended the inaugural Russia–Asean Summit in Kuala Lumpur.
Anwar added that US president Donald Trump had also informed him of a planned visit next month to coincide with the Asean Summit, with China‘s premier Li Qiang also scheduled to visit Kuala Lumpur.
“We are fortunate. Despite the tariff issue, president Donald Trump called and informed me that he will visit Malaysia next month to coincide with the Asean meeting. Premier Li Qiang will also be attending,” said Anwar.
