PPC Develops Ship Waste Management Sop To Safeguard Port Sustainability

GEORGE TOWN, Sept 5 (Bernama) — The Penang Port Commission (PPC) is developing a comprehensive standard operating procedure (SOP) for ship waste management activities, taking into account various aspects, including safety and environmental hygiene.

PPC chairman Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin said the SOP aims to ensure uniformity, compliance with relevant laws and smooth operations in handling ship waste at Penang Port.

“In the process of developing the SOP, PPC has held a series of engagement sessions with relevant stakeholders, each of whom has a significant role in shaping this SOP.

“Among the stakeholders involved is the Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM), which has the authority to approve applications for related works, subject to its jurisdiction,” he said in a statement today.

In addition, he said Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB), the appointed port operator, was also included in the engagement sessions to ensure that only companies licensed by PPC are allowed to conduct waste management activities within Penang Port.

Yeoh said PPC also took into account the involvement of licensed operators for this year and shipping companies to ensure the SOP covers all important aspects of ship waste management activities.

With the cooperation of PPSB, PPC is committed to ensuring that all licensed operators carry out ship waste management activities at Penang Port in full compliance with the established SOP, to safeguard the integrity of port operations and environmental sustainability.

PPC began licensing ship waste management activities in 2021 through Port Circular No. 6/2021 (Guidelines for Ship Waste Management Licence Applications) and later via amendments in Port Circular No. 4/2023 at Penang Port, following the need to monitor such activities.
