TANAH MERAH: A woman has alleged that her brother’s wife engaged in polyandry by marrying another man while still being legally married to her brother.
According to Kosmo, Nur, 35, along with two police officers and villagers, raided the home of her sister-in-law and the other man in Batu 11, Tanah Merah, Kelantan, on Dec 6.
Nur claimed that her sister-in-law, who is from Terengganu, had married a man from Johor over a year ago, while still legally married to her brother.
“During the raid, we found an unfamiliar man inside the house. He told us that my sister-in-law was his wife. I was shocked by this and immediately contacted my brother,” Nur told Kosmo.
She said the man claimed he had married her sister-in-law at the Songkhla Religious Office in Thailand on Nov 5 last year.
Nur added that her brother and sister-in-law had never divorced and continued to live together as husband and wife.
“I discovered that my sister-in-law would visit the other man’s house while my brother was away.
“During the day, she stayed at her second husband’s house, and at night, she returned to my brother.
“The distance between my brother’s home and the alleged second husband’s house is only 19km.
“If this had not been uncovered, my family and I would have continued to be deceived by her, which blatantly violates Islamic law,” she said.
Nur also claimed that a week after the raid, her sister-in-law filed a false police report, accusing her of harassment.
She added that the woman still refuses to leave her brother’s home.
“I have lodged a report with the Tanah Merah District Islamic Religious Office, but no action has been taken so far.
“This is no longer a personal matter as it involves the sanctity of Islam,” she said.
