PETALING JAYA:

Political commentator Murray Hunter was arrested by Thai authorities this morning over allegedly defamatory posts on social media.

He told FMT he was detained at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport at around 7.30am as he was about to leave the country for a personal trip to Hong Kong.

“I’m shocked at what is happening. I have not done anything wrong in Thailand,” he said.

A Thai immigration officer told FMT that the arrest was made under a warrant issued by the Bangkok southern criminal court.

Further details of the allegation remain unclear.

Hunter is expected to be transferred to the Yannawa police station in Bangkok, where the officer in charge of the case will take over the investigation and prepare documents for court.

The Australian, once a long-time resident of Malaysia, now stays in Thailand. He is known for his critical writings on Malaysian politics.
