JOHOR BARU: A policeman was hit by an alleged drunk driver while on active duty at an accident site, here.

Johor Baru North OCPD Asst Comm Balveer Singh said the incident, which involved a car and two police patrol motorcycles, occurred at KM8 of the highway at about 4am on Sunday (Sept 7).

A 23-year-old man, who was driving his car from Skudai, was believed to have lost control of the vehicle before ramming into two police patrol motorcycles that were parked near the scene of an earlier accident.

The motorcycles were manned by two police personnel, aged 29 and 36, who were carrying out traffic control duties at the time, he said in a statement.

One of the policemen sustained injuries to his left leg and was treated at Hospital Sultanah Aminah here, while the other officer and the driver were unharmed.

A breathalyser test on the driver showed levels of alcohol but he tested negative for drugs.

The suspect has been remanded until Monday (Sept 8) for investigation under Section 44(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for driving under the influence of intoxicating liquor or drugs.

If convicted, the offender may face imprisonment of not less than 10 years and not more than 15 years, a fine of between RM50,000 and RM100,000 and a driving licence suspension of 10 years.

ACP Balveer urged those with information related to the case to contact investigating officer Insp Noor Azlina Abdul Raof at 019-743 2966.
