ALOR STAR: The policeman involved in the road crash that claimed the life of a teenager in Guar Chempedak has been detained and questioned.
Kedah police chief Commissioner Adzli Abu Shah said the policeman had fully cooperated with the investigation.
He said the policeman had lodged a report immediately after the incident and has since been released on police bail after testing negative for drugs.
“He reported the crash and fully submitted to the investigation process. Urine tests came back negative, and he has no prior disciplinary or integrity-related offences on record,” Adzli told the New Straits Times.
He stressed that the incident is being treated with the utmost seriousness and transparency.
“If there had been any element of criminal intent or evidence that the policeman was under the influence, we would not have hesitated to take immediate and more serious action,” he said.
Adzli said the case, which was initially investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving, has now been reclassified under Section 41(1) of the same act for causing death by dangerous driving following the victim’s passing.
“There is no question of preferential treatment or cover-up. The same legal processes apply to all, regardless of whether the suspect is a civilian or a policeman,” he said.
He added that the decision to suspend the policeman will be evaluated based on the progress of the investigation.
“We are deeply saddened by the tragedy. A full and uncompromised investigation is ongoing, including an internal probe by the Integrity and Standards Compliance Department,” he said.
The victim, 16-year-old Muhammad Nur Iman Danial Mohd Roshidi, died at Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital’s intensive care unit on Thursday after battling critical injuries for three days.
He was hit by a Perodua Axia reportedly driven by the policeman at an intersection in Guar Chempedak on Monday.
His parents are leaving it to police to investigate the incident and hope it will be conducted with integrity.
