Police to question mother of late Palapes cadet over name-calling claims

KUALA LUMPUR: Police will seek further information from the mother of a university cadet who died during a training camp last month, following her claim that her son had been bullied and called names by his peers.

Kota Tinggi police chief Superintendent Yusof Othman said there was no information indicating that Syamsul Haris Shamsudin, 22, had been subjected to such name-calling.

“As for the claim that he was called names, we have no information about any bully calling him names.

“If such information exists, we will obtain further details from the mother (Ummu Haiman Bee Daulatgun) on what exactly happened and where,” he told the New Straits Times today.

Yusof also rejected the mother’s assertion that there were discrepancies between the time she was informed of her son’s condition and the hospital’s records of his death.

He said Syamsul was taken to Kota Tinggi Hospital immediately after the incident and died there after the doctor tried to resuscitate him.

“Training started at 2.30pm.

“By 2.40pm, he had a seizure, and the army medics attended to him.

“When he did not seem to recover, he was immediately taken to Kota Tinggi Hospital, arriving at about 3.15pm.

“He died at the hospital at 3.50pm,” he said.

On the alleged conspiracy between the authorities in the case, Yusof said police were carrying out the investigation transparently and professionally, in line with the law.

Earlier, Ummu Haiman said her son had claimed he was being provoked and that several people were unhappy with him before his death.

However, she did not name those involved.

Syamsul, a Reserve Officers’ Training Unit (Palapes) cadet, died on July 28 at Kota Tinggi Hospital, reportedly due to a seizure.

He was undergoing training at a camp in Skudai, Johor, at the time.

Ummu Haiman has insisted that her son’s death was not due to a seizure, citing bleeding and injuries on his body.

Earlier today, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Zambry Abdul Kadir said the task force investigating Syamsul Haris’ death is expected to finalise its report soon.
