Police have seized 3,586.45kg of MDMA worth RM598.9 million in a series of Klang Valley raids linked to an international drug syndicate.
Inspector-General of Police Khalid Ismail said the drugs were processed locally and likely destined for both the domestic market and countries such as Indonesia and Australia.
He said raids by Bukit Aman’s narcotics crime investigation department of premises in Kepong and Selayang on Sept 10 led to the arrests of four local men aged 34 to 51.
Khalid said the drugs could have harmed more than 12 million people if they had reached the market, and that the syndicate had been operating since July by renting industrial premises and using them as drug labs.
“Initial investigations showed that the suspects had specific roles … one acted as the coordinator and another as a chemist, while the others were an associate and a transporter,” Khalid told reporters today.
In the first raid on an industrial site in Kepong, police seized 3,330kg of liquid MDMA, 1,200kg of chemical liquid, 213.7kg of chemical powder, and drug-processing equipment. Three suspects were arrested.
A second raid on another premises in Kepong uncovered 75.3kg of MDMA powder, 231.15kg of liquid, 947.35kg of chemical liquid, 52.4kg of chemical powder, and more drug-processing equipment.
A third raid on a house in Selayang led to the arrest of the fourth suspect, though no drugs were found there.
The case is being investigated for drug trafficking under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment, along with at least 12 strokes of the cane, upon conviction.
