KUALA LUMPUR: The Road Transport Department and police will standardise traffic compound rates and enforcement methods nationwide from Jan 1.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the cabinet decided this on Oct 17 after finding that there were significant discrepancies in the compound rates and enforcement approaches between the two agencies.
“With this standardisation, compound rates will be harmonised to eliminate the perception that road law enforcement is inconsistent.”
He said this at a joint press conference with Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail at the Parliament media centre.
Loke said that the harmonised traffic fines will be based on the principle of “The Less You Delay, The Less You Pay”, where those who settle their penalties promptly will get a lower rate.
He said this approach would serve as an incentive for motorists to take responsibility by paying their fines promptly.
“The previous system of offering discounts only during special campaigns will be replaced, as it was unfair to those who paid their summonses early.”
However, he added this incentive would not apply to serious, non-compoundable offences, such as driving without insurance or licence, or using a fake motor vehicle licence.
