Police record activist's statement over alleged insult to Johor royalty


Police seize phone and record activist Reza’s statement over a viral social media post allegedly insulting the Johor Royal Institution.

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have recorded the statement of activist and graphic designer Mohd Reza Mohd Zarin over an allegedly defamatory social media post.

The post is said to have insulted the Johor Royal Institution.

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk M. Kumar said a mobile phone believed used to upload the post was also seized.

The case is being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

Police have so far received 284 reports nationwide regarding the issue.

“Firm and uncompromising action will be taken against any individual who insults the Royal Institution in accordance with existing laws,” Kumar said.

The viral Facebook post by Reza had prompted reports from state leaders, NGOs and Johor lawmakers.
