KUCHING, Sept 8 — A Sarawakian police constable is in stable condition after being shot and stabbed during a routine patrol in Perak yesterday by a man transporting a woman’s body in the backseat of a car.

Perak police commissioner Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin said the incident occurred at 1.15am during a routine crime prevention patrol, when a Simpang Pulai police station team found a car being driven in a suspicious manner at Taman Desa Pakatan.

“The patrol team tried to halt the vehicle in question as the suspect attempted to flee the scene. This resulted in a car chase before the suspect’s car stopped at an oil palm plantation.

“A struggle ensued between the suspect and the police personnel involved – resulting in the policeman being shot in the stomach after the suspect managed to snatch his service handgun.

“The victim was also stabbed by the suspect before the latter managed to flee the scene with the firearm,” Noor Hisam said in a statement.

He said the victim is currently in a stable condition at Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital in Ipoh.

An inspection of the suspect’s vehicle led to the discovery of an unidentified woman’s body in the back seat and the body was brought to the hospital’s forensic unit for a post-mortem.

“The police are now on the hunt for the suspect who fled the scene and those with information may contact investigating officer ASP Fadli Ahmad on 012-2500019,” Noor Hisam added.

Police have since nabbed six individuals, comprising five men and a woman, in connection with the discovery of the body.

Noor Hisam also confirmed the female victim had been identified and the post-mortem revealed she died of asphyxia-related causes. — The Borneo Post
