Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin has dismissed an anonymous letter questioning the integrity of deputy president Hamzah Zainudin and the existence of a “broker” within the party.
Speaking to the media after an event here, Muhyiddin said the claims made in the letter had not been verified.
“I usually do not pay attention to such letters. But as president, I take note of the matter.
“I don’t know what the real story is, whether it’s true or false, deliberately spread, or just nonsense,” he said when asked to comment on grassroots leaders’ criticism of the letter.
The poison-pen letter sighted by FMT accused Hamzah of fabricating claims that Muhyiddin had promised to hand over the leadership to him.
It referred to Bersatu’s so-called “Gopeng Consensus”, arguing that it was merely an understanding for Muhyiddin to decide the party’s 2024 election formula, not a pledge of succession.
The letter accused Hamzah of attempting to undermine Muhyiddin’s presidency and spreading lies to divide Bersatu.
Both Muhyiddin and Hamzah were unopposed in last October’s party election. For the 2024–2027 term, Muhyiddin retained the Bersatu presidency without contest.
Asked whether the issue might come up at Bersatu’s annual general assembly this weekend, Muhyiddin said he could not predict what would happen.
“We act based on verified facts; we do not act on rumours or hearsay,” he said.
