PN leadership doesn't have to necessarily come from Pas, says deputy spiritual leader

TUMPAT: Perikatan Nasional (PN) leadership does not necessarily have to come from , deputy spiritual leader Datuk Ahmad Yakob said, as the coalition faces a leadership transition following Tan Sri Yassin’s resignation as PN chairman, effective Jan 1.

Ahmad said there are many capable leaders within PN’s component parties, and the coalition has yet to formally decide on a candidate. The matter has not been discussed by ‘s Syura Council, and no decision has been made so far.

“There may be personal views among leaders, but the Syura Council has not made any decision yet. Any opinion should be raised at the presidents’ council or at meetings involving all component parties in PN,” he said.

Ahmad said that such views should not be treated as an official stance, saying will be guided only by a final decision announced through proper and official channels.

“At this point, there are many qualified candidates among leaders of PN’s component parties who are capable of leading the coalition,” he added.

Commenting on relations between Pas and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu), Ahmad said that minor issues exist between the two parties, describing them as normal differences that can be resolved amicably.

“To say there are no problems may not be accurate, but these are normal issues. In any household, there will be differences. What is important is that we resolve them amicably,” he said.

On calls by party leaders for Pas to revive the Muafakat Nasional spirit, Ahmad said the party has yet to hold a Syura Ulama meeting to discuss the matter because some members’ tenure ended after five years and new appointments have not yet been made.

“Nevertheless, we will wait for the views and stand to be decided by the Syura Ulama following recent developments,” he said.

Ahmad was commenting on Pas’ remarks on who would replace as PN chairman after he resigned from the post amid internal tensions within the coalition.

Following ‘s resignation, Pas has publicly signalled its readiness to take the helm of PN and lead the coalition into upcoming state and general elections.
