SERDANG: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reminded Malaysians that the country’s independence was not achieved cheaply, but through immense sacrifices of lives, property and generations of struggle.
Delivering his National Day Celebration 2025 address at the Malaysia Agricultural Expo Park (MAEPS) here today, Anwar reminded the youth that the freedom they enjoy today should never be taken for granted.
“Compared to other countries, the number of those who perished may not be as high as in Indonesia, Vietnam or Algeria, which claimed millions of lives.
“But thousands still sacrificed their lives – from the days of Mat Kilau to Datuk Maharajalela, to the home guards, soldiers and police who fought for decades against colonial rule and the Malayan Communist Party until peace was secured,” he said.
He also highlighted the role of past leaders in shaping the nation’s path to independence.
“The late Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj carried the banner forward, supported by the strength of the Malays as the core, joined by Indians, Chinese and later leaders from Sarawak and Sabah, leading to the creation of a new, independent and sovereign nation on Sept 16,” he said.
Anwar urged Malaysians, especially the younger generation, to appreciate the sacrifices that brought about independence and to safeguard the nation’s unique identity.
“There were too many sacrifices of lives, property, tears and sweat.
“I call on the youth to see and to learn that what we now enjoy came at a price, not cheaply.
“Preserve this nation. This country is unique.
“It is the only one with so many races and religions that has remained strong in its security, economy, unity and culture compared with others in the region and the world,” he said.
He said independence was only possible because of unity across all communities.
