SHAH ALAM, Sept 11 (Bernama) — A company engaged in plastic scrap recycling activities here was fined RM65,000 by the Kuala Selangor Sessions Court yesterday for three offences that violated the Environmental Quality Act 1974 and its regulations.
Selangor Department of Environment (JAS) Director Wandi Yadzid Yaakob stated in a statement today that the court made the decision after the Factory Manager, representing the company as the Accused Person (OKS), pleaded guilty.
Judge Nurul Mardhiah Mohamed Redza also sentenced the manager to 26 months in prison if the fine is not paid.
“Based on the facts of the case, an integrated operation was conducted following public complaints received concerning a premises operating on Jalan Bukit Badong in Kuala Selangor on March 13, 2023, involving the Kuala Selangor Municipal Council and the Sabak Bernam branch of JAS Selangor.
“Investigations found that the premises was conducting plastic scrap recycling activities, with the discovery of plastic scrap heaps, two shredder machines, and four pelletizer machines,” he said.
He added that the premises failed to provide written notification and was not equipped with an air pollution control system as required by the Environmental Quality (Clean Air) Regulations 2014.
Wandi Yadzid stated that one charge was made under Section 34A(8) of the Environmental Quality Act 1974, while two charges were under Regulation 29 of the Environmental Quality (Clean Air) Regulations 2014.
“The Selangor JAS Prosecuting Officer requested the court to impose a fitting sentence to serve as a lesson to companies to respect the law and national sovereignty by conducting their activities according to the country’s legal requirements.
“JAS also advises companies to be more responsible and not to undermine environmental sustainability in pursuit of profit,” he said.
