Johor PKR has set its sights on contesting three parliamentary seats in the southern state in the next general election (GE16), including the Muar seat held by Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman.
Johor PKR chief Dr Zaliha Mustafa said the state leadership’s new lineup wanted to regain the Muar, Pagoh and Mersing parliamentary seats, MalaysiaGazette reported.
She placed special focus on Muar, saying it is a seat that PKR has a high chance of winning.
“In GE16, Johor PKR will work towards wresting Muar. We’re confident the rakyat will be with us in bringing meaningful change to the area,” she was quoted as saying at an event in Muar, Johor.
Syed Saddiq, the former Muda president, won the Muar seat in 2018 on a PKR ticket when he was still in Bersatu with a 6,953-vote majority.
The former youth and sports minister retained the seat in the 2022 general election, when Muda contested alongside Pakatan Harapan in the nationwide polls.
He quit the government bloc in September 2023 to join the opposition, expressing dissatisfaction with the slow pace of reforms under the national unity administration.
That led to Syed Saddiq being challenged to vacate his seat and force a by-election to test support for his party among the Muar electorate.
