BUTTERWORTH, Sept 16 (Bernama) — A special photo exhibition was held in conjunction with Malaysia Day celebration today, offering the public a visual journey through the nation’s formation, highlighting key moments in history that shaped modern-day Malaysia.
Jointly organised by the Department of Information Malaysia (JAPEN) and the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama), the exhibition took place at the main concourse of the PICCA@Butterworth Arena Convention Centre.
JAPEN Assistant Librarian Hirdawati Abdul Rahman said the exhibition was divided into two main sections, namely JAPEN’s showcase on the formation of Malaysia and early Malaysia Day celebrations, while Bernama contributed a themed photo series focusing on national unity.
“These photographs depict events leading up to the formation of Malaysia, the official declaration, and various Malaysia Day celebrations over the years,” she told Bernama.
Among the highlights was a historic photo of the Cobbold Commission, which played a crucial role in gathering public opinion in Sabah and Sarawak prior to Malaysia’s formation in 1963.
Other notable images include early Malaysia Day celebrations at Stadium Merdeka, as well as scenes from Sabah, Sarawak, and Singapore’s participation during the early years of nationhood.
Hirdawati said the exhibition served to remind younger generations of the struggles and sacrifices made by past leaders to build a harmonious and united country.
Meanwhile, Bernama Chief Photographer Mazlan Samion said the selection of photographs for the exhibition was carefully curated from the agency’s archives by a dedicated team, ensuring each image aligns with the theme of unity and the spirit of Malaysia Day.
“We selected photos that are not only visually captivating but also carry powerful messages of unity and celebration.
“The objective is to raise awareness and provide historical insight into the formation of Malaysia in 1963, which laid the foundation for our interdependent multiracial nation,” he said.
Mazlan added that the exhibition also honoured the work of Bernama photographers who have captured meaningful moments of national unity for both current and future generations.
A total of 72 photographs were showcased, 16 of which were contributed by Bernama, with the remainder from JAPEN’s collection.
The photo exhibition was held in conjunction with the Malaysia Day 2025 celebration, themed Malaysia MADANI: Rakyat Disantuni.
