KUALA LUMPUR:

The phone number used to send threatening texts to Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli’s wife is registered to a foreigner, the inspector-general of police revealed.

“We are still trying to trace the individual and the nationality,” Khalid Ismail told reporters here today.

Last week, Rafizi said his wife received two threatening text messages the day after their son was attacked by two men with a syringe.

According to the former deputy president, his wife received a text message from an unknown number reading: “Be quiet. If you continue, AIDS.”

Several hours later, she received the same text message, followed by three syringe emojis.

On Aug 13, Rafizi’s 12-year-old son was attacked at a shopping mall in at about 2pm.

CCTV footage showed that two men, dressed in black with their faces fully covered by helmets, had followed his wife’s car on a motorcycle before the incident.

His son, who was dragged and stabbed with a syringe, was rushed to hospital for treatment and a checkup.

The former economy minister said he suspected that the attack was linked to a case he was looking into, adding that he had met with a group of whistleblowers a week before.

Khalid said 19 statements had been recorded so far, including those from the family and their driver.

Asked to comment on individuals identified by Rafizi in subsequent social media posts following the attack, Kahlid said he could not comment.

“It is outside my jurisdiction,” he said.
