PETROS Inks Strategic Energy Deals With International Partners

KUCHING, Nov 11 (Bernama) — Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (PETROS) has signed three strategic energy agreements with international partners to advance oil and gas exploration and accelerate carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) initiatives in Sarawak.

The agreements were signed with the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC), SC Tubular Solutions Malaysia Sdn Bhd (SCTSM), Superconducting Sensor Technology Corporation (SUSTEC) and Woodside Energy.

In a statement, PETROS chairman, Tan Sri Hamid Bugo said the partnerships mark another milestone in Sarawak’s energy journey towards a sustainable and innovative future.

“Through these collaborations, we are strengthening partnerships and embracing innovation to unlock new opportunities in exploration and low-carbon development, shaping a reliable, equitable and inclusive energy ecosystem that supports Sarawak’s long-term growth and prosperity,” he said.

Under the Joint Study Agreement (JSA), PETROS and JOGMEC will collaborate on Sarawak’s first onshore exploration project in the Mukah-Balingian region to enhance subsurface knowledge and support responsible, long-term onshore oil and gas development.

The partnership will also help build local capabilities and empower Sarawak’s talent in energy innovation.

Meanwhile, PETROS’ collaboration with SCTSM and SUSTEC involves a Proof-of-Concept Study using SUSTEC’s advanced Superconducting Quantum Interference Device – Transient Electromagnetic Method (SQUID-TEM) technology to detect oil and gas signals at the Adong Kechil West field near Miri.

This marks the first deployment of the SQUID-TEM technology in Sarawak, aimed at improving exploration accuracy and reducing uncertainty.

For the CCUS initiative, PETROS signed a Storage Study Agreement (SSA) with Woodside Energy under the Sarawak Bid Round 2024 to assess the feasibility of safely storing carbon underground at Site 3A in Central Luconia, offshore Sarawak.

PETROS was represented by vice-president for Subsurface and Development, Jeremy Wong and senior vice-president for Sarawak Resource Management, Datuk Abang Arabi Abang Narudin.

JOGMEC was represented by its executive vice-president of Energy Business Unit, Mori Hiroyuki; SUSTEC by president and co-chief executive officer, Tsunehiro Hato; SCTSM by its president, Yosuke Yamashita; and Woodside by its Carbon Capture and Storage general manager, Andrew Nicholls.

PETROS added that these strategic partnerships will enhance Sarawak’s energy capabilities, drive innovation in exploration and low-carbon technologies, and create new opportunities for local talent and industries, in line with the state’s vision to become a regional hub for sustainable energy development.
