IPOH: Perak Ruler Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah launched the RM430mil Sunway Medical Centre in Tambun on Wednesday (Oct 29).
Also in attendance was Raja Permaisuri of Perak Tuanku Zara Salim and Their Royal Highness were accompanied by Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad and his wife Datin Seri Aezer Zubin.
Also present were Sunway Group founder and chairman Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah, Sunway Healthcare Group president Datuk Lau Beng Long and state executive council members.
The medical centre is equipped with 165 licensed beds (259 bed capacity), 63 consultation suites, eight operating theatres and 24 critical care units, with an addition of eight paediatric and neonatal critical care bays.
Apart from a dedicated Cancer and Nuclear Medicine Centre, the hospital is home to six Centres of Excellence, covering cardiology, orthopaedics, neurosciences, clinical
oncology, women and children’s health and digestive health.
In his speech, Lau said that the medical centre marks a significant milestone, serving as Sunway’s fifth tertiary hospital.
“We are proud to introduce Perak’s first PET-CT scanner and the Mako SmartRobotics system for cutting-edge cancer diagnostics and robotic knee and hip replacement surgery,” he said.
Meanwhile, Saarani, in his speech, said that the health sector would generate wide-reaching economic benefits, creating both professional and technical job opportunities while bringing positive spillover effects to related industries such as pharmaceuticals, logistics, hospitality and tourism.
“With the establishment of modern hospitals like Sunway Medical Centre, new doors are opening for local graduates to gain knowledge and hands-on clinical experience right here in their home state.
“This is where they can build their careers, serve the community, and contribute to Perak’s continued pride, driven by the strength and talent of its own people, ” he said.
Sunway Medical Centre Ipoh began operations on April 2, 2025.
Since its opening, the hospital has served 12,278 patient visits, including 323 inbound patients from countries such as China, Singapore, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines, the United States, India, Thailand, Japan and others, as of Aug 31.
The hospital is staffed by over 280 personnel, including 37 medical specialists and sub-specialists, as well as healthcare professionals such as doctors, nurses, and allied health personnel.
There are also plans to expand nationwide, with new tertiary hospitals planned for Sunway City Iskandar Puteri in Johor, Putrajaya, Seremban Sentral Transit-Oriented Development in Negri Sembilan, Paya Terubong in Penang, and Kota Baru in Kelantan.
