IPOH: A total of RM15.7mil worth of drugs have been seized by the Perak police so far this year, says state Deputy Police Chief Senior Asst Comm Mohammad Azlin Sadari.
He said the drugs were seized between January and Aug 24 this year.
“Syabu, ketamine and heroin are the most common types of drugs seized.
“We have also arrested a total of 13,997 individuals in connection with drug offences,” he said during a disposal exercise of narcotics items at the state police contingent headquarters here on Thursday (Aug 28).
“Out of this, 1,918 were drug distributors, an increase of 11% compared to 1,727 during the same period last year.
“From the total, 351 suspects were arrested under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and 51 people were detained under the Special Preventive Measures of the Dangerous Drug Act 1985, as they were believed to be masterminds, planners or financiers behind syndicates busted this year,” he added.
He also said that 4,816 people were arrested for drug possession, marking a 13% rise from 4,257 last year, while 7,212 individuals tested positive for drugs during urine tests, a decrease of 8% compared with 7,852 during the same period last year.
“About 4,827 investigation papers were opened under the Dangerous Drugs Act and the Poisons Act, of which 4,714 were successfully prosecuted, reflecting a 98% charge rate.
“Action under the Dangerous Drugs (Forfeiture of Property) Act 1988 had also led to the seizure of assets belonging to drug traffickers, including houses, land, jewellery, vehicles and bank accounts worth RM6.3mil,” he added.
SAC Mohammad Azlin also said that drugs and ketum liquid worth RM26.14mil from 5,483 cases concluded in court between 2012 and 2024 will be sent for disposal.
“Among the items are 4,496g of heroin, 165,326.29g of cannabis, 404,404.48g of syabu, 46,858.34g of ketamine, 1.32g of ecstasy, 56.7g of yaba and 83.62g of Erimin.
“It also involves 9.6g of caffeine, 25,198.6ml of liquid caffeine, 81.01g of benzodiazepines, 651,941.2g of ketum leaves, 3,012,600.2ml of ketum liquid, 92ml of cough syrup, 327,950.5g of chemical powder and 1,925,100ml of liquid chemicals,” he said.
He added that the disposal will be carried out at a facility in Taman Perindustrian Tungzen, Bukit Pelanduk in Kampung Kepayang.
