SEBERANG PERAI, Sept 29 — The Penang Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) has advised the public to avoid visiting high-risk water recreation areas, especially during the current monsoon season, due to the danger of sudden water surges.

State director Mohamad Shoki Hamzah said there have been recent incidents caused by rapidly rising water levels following heavy rain.

“Heavy rain during monsoon season can lead to surges in water levels, so it is best to avoid these places when it is raining heavily,” he said at a press conference here today.

He said that last year, Penang recorded 16 drowning-related cases, four of which occurred in swimming pools. As of this year, seven such cases have been reported.

Regarding broader monsoon preparations, Mohamad Shoki said the situation in Penang remains under control, with no major floods recorded in 2024.

However, the department has identified 256 flood hotspots across the state: 82 on the island and 174 in Seberang Perai.

He confirmed that all 800 of the department’s personnel are on standby for the monsoon season, which is expected to last until November.

Mohamad Shok said Penang is a premier tourist destination, so safety measures are important to protect residents and visitors.

All must remain vigilant, especially when it comes to flash floods that could lead to significant damage, he added.

Mohamad Shoki was speaking after the launch of a hotel guest fire safety awareness video at the Holiday Inn and Suites, an event officiated by Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.

The programme aims to raise safety awareness and standards in hotels, particularly during emergencies like fires or incidents around swimming pools.
