GEORGE TOWN: A bank employee here found his own way of expressing love for the nation by embarking on a solo run covering 68 kilometres (km) in conjunction with Malaysia’s 68th National Day celebration.

Ahmed Faisal Mohd Lazim, 50, said the initiative was not only symbolic of this year’s independence milestone, but also aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle among Malaysians.

He said this was not his first such run, having carried it out for five consecutive years since 2017 before taking a break due to health issues.

“This year, I return with renewed spirit, and this run is not just a physical challenge but a symbol of my love and devotion to Malaysia.

“As a proud Penangite, I am honoured to carry out this initiative, and I hope it inspires the community to remain active because health is the most valuable asset we must safeguard,” he said when met by Bernama at the flag-off ceremony in Batu Maung here today.

The ceremony was officiated by Penang Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Dr Mohamad Abdul Hamid.

Ahmed Faisal, who began his run at 5.45pm today, will pass several landmarks around the city, including the George Town UNESCO World Heritage Site, Tanjung Bungah, and The Light, before completing it at Padang Kota Lama at 8am tomorrow, where he will be welcomed by Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.

The founder of Stay Fit Sunnah Sports Club (SFSSC) said he had undergone intensive training for two months to prepare for the mission, while also paying close attention to diet and health.

He also expressed gratitude to his team for their support and efforts in helping to make his dream a reality.

“I hope what I am doing will not only convey the spirit of independence but also foster unity and togetherness among Malaysians,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mohamad described Ahmed Faisal’s effort as a manifestation of strong patriotic spirit, worthy of being emulated especially by the younger generation in the state.

“It is hoped that this noble effort will serve as an inspiration and example for the public, particularly the youth, and as a model for the people of Penang as a whole,” he said. – BERNAMA
