LETTERS:In the month of August, the word “patriotism” is often bandied about. Patriotism is often seen as a simple concept, a love for one’s country.
But it is so much more than just waving a flag or singing the national anthem. It is a deep-seated sense of belonging, a commitment to the well-being of the nation and its people for a life time.
It is about recognising that we are all in this together, regardless of our backgrounds or beliefs.
So, why is patriotism important? Well, a strong sense of patriotism fosters unity and social cohesion.
When people feel connected to their country, they are more likely to work together to solve problems and build a better future.
It encourages civic engagement, inspiring citizens to participate in their communities and contribute to the democratic process.
Patriotism also promotes a sense of national identity, which can be especially important in diverse societies like Malaysia.
Now, how can Malaysians of all races display their patriotism? Flying the flag or singing the National Anthem is just one small part of it.
True patriotism lies in our everyday actions and attitudes. We all should uphold the law. This is fundamental to show respect for the country and its institutions.
We should appreciate our resources, infrastructure, and opportunities available. Keep our environment clean and green for our and future generations.
We should respect each other’s sentiments, religions, and cultures by being tolerant, understanding and celebrating our unity in diversity. Always uphold and practice the five principles of our Rukun Negara at all times.
We should avoid anything and everything that is divisive, like in nature, discrimination and hate speech. National harmony should be our priority at all times.
Patriotism does not require grand gestures or expensive displays. It is about the small, everyday choices we make that demonstrate our love and commitment to Malaysia.
It is about being responsible citizens, caring neighbours, and proud Malaysians. It is about embracing our shared identity while celebrating our unique differences.
After all, patriotism is simple, and it is something everyone can and must embrace.
Patriotism is an everyday commitment, not just a seasonal display. When Malaysians act with honesty, kindness, and dedication to the country’s principles, they keep the spirit of patriotism alive in the most powerful way.
