KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 28 — A pawnshop manager and her boyfriend have been arrested on suspicion of orchestrating a robbery at the Pasir Mas premises where she worked, fleeing with jewellery valued at RM5.7 million last Tuesday.
Five other employees, including a security guard, were also detained to assist with investigations.
The suspects, aged between 26 and 66, were apprehended in separate raids in Pasir Mas, Kota Bharu, and Rawang.
Kelantan Police Chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat told national daily Harian Metro the robbery was reported at 1pm on Tuesday.
The male suspect allegedly sprayed disinfectant and brandished a knife at customers before seizing 10.9 kilograms of jewellery from a safe.
“Following the incident, we launched our first operation in Pasir Mas at 4pm, arresting four women and one man, all employees including a security guard,” he said.
A second raid at a Rawang residence led to the arrest of a 49-year-old man and the seizure of two knives, disinfectant, and cash.
Based on information from this suspect, police conducted a third raid at a house in Kota Bharu last Saturday, recovering 933 packets containing jewellery worth RM5.7 million.
The pawnshop manager and owner of the house was also arrested.
Yusoff said the manager and her boyfriend are suspected of being the main orchestrators of the robbery.
The manager had been employed at the pawnshop for 17 years, running operations while the owner resided in Terengganu.
“This incident was planned by employees, led by the manager and her boyfriend.
“All suspects are remanded until Thursday.
“None have prior criminal records and all tested negative for drugs.
“The case is being investigated under Section 395 of the Penal Code,” he added.
