YAN, Sept 13 — Talk about Perikatan Nasional’s (PN) prime minister candidate continued at the PAS general assembly in Kedah today despite repeated attempts to nip the subject in the bud.
PAS deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man who was nominated as a potential candidate brushed off the idea, while vice-president Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah volunteered himself for the role, BH Online reported.
“There are many other candidates. In PAS we have many great figures, far greater than me,” Tuan Ibrahim, the PAS Youth wing’s pick, was quoted as saying after launching the central PAS As Sabiqun assembly in Guar Chempedak, Kedah.
He insisted that the party has many other capable figures, listing as examples Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor and Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar who had proven themselves.
“Others should be highlighted, not me. There are many more. We also have professionals in various fields,” the PAS Number Two was quoted as saying.
He added that PAS Youth was probably just joking.
PAS Youth chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden was reported to have floated Tuan Ibrahim’s name as PN’s most suitable prime minister candidate, while also mentioning Sanusi, Samsuri and PAS vice-president Datuk Idris Ahmad as alternatives.
Mohd Amar, however, took the opposite view, saying there was nothing wrong with him being considered.
“Why not? I can be prime minister, what’s the problem… but the question is whether there’s really a need to name a prime minister candidate at this stage,” he was quoted as saying today.
He stressed that PAS has never promoted a single “poster boy” and that the final decision ultimately rests with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
