PAS says ready to lead Malaysia, vows governance rooted in Islam

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 15 — has declared its readiness to govern the country and to put forward a prime ministerial candidate from within its leadership.

Party president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang said would govern by upholding the Federal Constitution while adhering to what he described as the true interpretation of , according to a report published in Utusan Malaysia today. 

He stressed that the party would not sideline the rights and interests of other communities, in line with Malaysia’s multi-ethnic society.

“All parties must believe that only , as a complete, just and merciful religion, can unite a plural society in harmony and safety.

“This is ‘s commitment to non-Muslims — that prioritises peace and brotherhood, without compulsion in faith, even when Islam holds full power,” he said.

He made the remarks while delivering his keynote address at PAS’s 71st annual congress at the Kedah PAS Complex in Kota Sarang Semut today.

Also present were Perikatan Nasional chairman and Bersatu president Tan Sri Yassin, along with Gerakan president Datuk Dominic Lau.

Abdul Hadi added that Islam obliges rulers to act justly towards all and allows followers of other religions to practise what is permitted in their faiths, while respecting the sensitivities of Muslims.

At the same time, he said, Islam also commands its followers to respect the sensitivities of non-Muslims, even in matters of divine faith.
