ALOR STAR: Pas secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said the resolution passed at the 71st Pas Muktamar Assembly for a Perikatan Nasional (PN) prime minister candidate to be chosen from among Pas leaders is not final.
He said that although the assembly is the party’s highest decision-making body, the matter must still be discussed with PN’s leadership before any official agreement is reached.
“Usually, we will send an official notice to PN for deliberation at the coalition’s Supreme Council. Therefore, it is not a final decision but remains open for discussion,” he told reporters after the conclusion of the assembly at the Kedah Pas Complex today.
On speculation over potential candidates from Pas, Takiyuddin said the party had not endorsed anyone.
“All leaders with the required qualities may be considered, whether ulama, technocrats or professionals. Pas leadership combines both groups, not solely the ulama.
“Our focus now is on preparing for the 16th General Election (GE16) and winning as many seats as possible. Without seats, there is no point discussing a prime minister candidate. That is Pas’ position,” he said.
He added that the criteria outlined by Pas president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang for the premiership — including knowledge, integrity and principle — remain the party’s guiding standard.
Takiyuddin also rejected the notion that the candidate must come exclusively from the ulama wing, stressing that Pas’ leadership is collectively shaped by all its wings.
“It does not necessarily have to be from the Dewan Ulama. We are not an ‘ulama-only’ leadership, but we do have ulama leaders alongside technocrats and professionals,” he said.
