The son-in-law of PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang and the leaders of the party’s federal territories chapter were among 50 participants of an anti-corruption gathering outside the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) headquarters here today.
The gathering, which began at 10am, opened with speeches by several federal territories PAS leaders and pro-Perikatan Nasional (PN) activists.
It concluded with an address by Hadi’s son-in-law, Zaharudin Muhammad, who is also the Sungai Buloh PAS chief.
Those who joined the rally included federal territories PAS Dewan Ulama permanent chairman Hoslan Hussin, the division’s youth chief Azmer Syazwan, and pro-PN activist Syarul Ema Rena Abu Samah, better known as Ratu Naga.
Actress Rafidah Ibrahim and former law minister Zaid Ibrahim were also in attendance, as was controversial businessman Albert Tei, who is currently facing corruption charges in court.
In his speech, Zaharudin said the fight against corruption must be supported by all parties, and that “major changes are needed”.
The gathering, closely monitored by police and MACC officers, ended at around noon.
In June, Tanjung Batu assemblyman Andi Suryady Bandy and former Sindumin assemblyman Dr Yusof Yacob were charged with receiving RM150,000 and RM200,000 in bribes from Tei in connection with mineral prospecting licence applications in Sabah.
Tei was charged with two counts of giving bribes. All three claimed trial.
The state government had left it to MACC to conduct an independent and thorough investigation into the Sabah mining scandal.
MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki confirmed that caretaker chief minister Hajiji Noor had been cleared of wrongdoing.
