Parit court fines Indonesian mother after tragic death of two-month-old son from suffocation

PARIT, Sept 22 — An Indonesian woman was fined RM2,000 by the Magistrate’s Court here today after pleading guilty to a charge of causing the death by negligence of her two-month-old child ungest child last Thursday.

Magistrate Nurul Izalina Rajaaimeted out the fine, in default six months in jail, on Dewinta Tefa, 36.

The mother of six was charged with negligently causing the death of Arkan Andre Soveeal Asit at Jalan Sungai Jejawi, Kampung Sungai Dua Kota Setia near here at 5.30 am last Sept 18.

The charge, under Section 304A of the Penal Code, provides a maximum jail sentence of two years or a fine or both, if convicted.

During mitigation, lawyer Nurul Syuhada Mohd Yusof, representing the woman, said her client has six children, four of whom are in Indonesia, and that she is unemployed, while he husband works at an oil palm plantation with an income of RM1,500 per month.

The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Wan Mohd Ameerul Nazhif Wan Zulfikri.

Based on police investigations, it was found that the baby suffocated while sleeping beside his mother, who unintentionally smothered him on the same bed.

The autopsy revealed that the cause of death was brain swelling and fluid in the lungs due to being smothered. — Bernama
