SEREMBAN: Police have detained a couple believed to be the parents of two children who drowned after the car they were in rolled forward and plunged into Sg Linggi.
State police chief Dep Comm Datuk Alzafny Ahmad said police are also investigating the case under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
He said the couple were detained as there were doubts in their statements relating to the incident.
A background check on the 46-year-old male suspect revealed he had 16 previous cases and is on the wanted list for four.
Both children were from Shah Alam in Selangor.
Dep Comm Alzafny said the 41-year-old female suspect had no previous police record.
Urine tests for drug abuse on both suspects returned negative.
He said checks also revealed that the car involved in the case had been reported stolen.
Dep Comm Alzafny said police will apply for an order to remand the duo on Friday (Sept 5).
He urged those with information to contact investigating officer ASP Husairin Che Hussin at 012-965 4927 or the district police station at 06-647 2222 to help in the investigation.
Earlier on Wednesday (Sept 4), the two young siblings drowned when the car, which was parked along Sg Linggi here, suddenly rolled into the river.
Port Dickson OCPD Supt Maslan Udin said the eight-year-old girl and her six-year-old brother were resting in the car with the couple along the riverbank before the incident.
He said based on preliminary investigation, the man got out of the car, which was parked below the Tg Agas bridge, to have a cigarette and the car suddenly began rolling towards the river.
The car engine was switched off at the time.
Supt Maslan said passersby managed to pull the woman out in time, but the children were trapped in the vehicle.
He said the car will be sent for inspection to determine why it suddenly rolled into the river.
