SHAH ALAM:

Residents in Jalan Kampung Papan, Klang, who were affected by the demolition of their houses, will receive affordable housing to be developed by Permodalan Negeri Berhad, menteri besar Amirudin Shari said.

He said the matter was agreed upon at a meeting this morning when the developer Melati Ehsan Consolidated Sdn Bhd agreed to hand over 2.83 hectares (seven acres) of land for a comprehensive development project.

“We will develop housing for the urban settlers… but it will take time because it involves comprehensive development,” he said.

For the time being, residents would be provided places in the Smart Sewa Skim housing project “and if there are financial problems, we can discuss it”, he said after tabling ‘s 2026 budget.

He said the Kampung Papan land ownership issue could have been resolved harmoniously if the residents’ representatives had not taken the case to court.

“The solution has been tried many times, including in the last term, the developer wanted to provide a site but (the parties in the suit) did not want to give in and wanted to continue with the court case.

“In the end, the court ruled that the land belonged to the developer. The state government tried to help but the effort was unsuccessful,” he said.

Earlier today, state executive councillor Borhan Aman Shah said the state government had written to the developer on Nov 11 to confirm that the company would hand over 3.2 hectares of land as agreed at a meeting with Amirudin Shari last month.

There have been protests over the demolition of homes at Jalan Kampung Papan, with 14 people, comprising 11 men and three women, being detained by police. Most of them were from NGOs, police said. They were freed on police bail.
