KUALA LUMPUR: South Korean Kim Pan Gon, who left Malaysia’s national coaching job abruptly 18 months ago, may just return to Malaysian football — this time with Selangor in the Super League.
The former Harimau Malaya head coach has emerged as a leading candidate to fill the Selangor hotseat.
Selangor are currently under interim coach, Frenchman Christophe Gamel following the departure of Japanese Katsuhito Kinoshi in September.
Speculation gathered pace after a social media post on Wednesday claimed that Pan Gon was set to join the M-League with Selangor his likely destination.
Pan Gon is currently unattached after parting ways with K-League giants Ulsan HD following a run of disappointing results that led to the club terminating his contract in August.
The 56-year-old recorded 20 wins from 52 matches in all competitions during his spell with Ulsan, a period that included winning the K-League 1 title in 2024.
Pan Gon guided Harimau Malaya from January 2022 to July 2024, a stint that raised his standing among local supporters. But he left the national role to join Ulsan.
A source said Selangor have been monitoring Pan Gon for some time, with several senior players in the team supportive of him as their coach.
This is not the first time Pan Gon has been linked with Selangor, having previously been reported to be close to joining the Klang Valley club but the move failed to materialise.
As of now, there has been no official confirmation from Selangor FC or Pan Gon regarding the speculation
