Palapes cadet's second autopsy to be handled by three experts

KUALA LUMPUR: Three experts from the National Institute of Forensic Medicine will perform the second autopsy on Reserve Officer Training Unit (Palapes) cadet Syamsul Haris Shamsudin’s body today.

Lawyer Datuk Naran Singh Ara Singh said the post-mortem, which began at 9am, will be observed by forensic expert Datuk Seri Dr Bhupinder Singh, who is representing Syamsul Haris’ family.

“If there are any findings, we will inform you,” he told reporters today.

“After the autopsy, the re-burial will be arranged for this afternoon or tonight.”

He said the autopsy was expected to take some time to analyse several external injuries found by the family.

Earlier, Naran said he would hand over evidence, in the form of an audio clip and transcript from a person who was at the camp that Syamsul was attending, to the police.

This evidence follows a previous submission by Naran of a USB drive containing a transcript of a conversation between Syamsul Haris’ mother, Ummu Haiman Bee Daulatgun, and a person identified only as “A”.

The family previously submitted the evidence in a bid to have Syamsul Haris’ remains exhumed for a second post-mortem and for an inquest into his death.

His remains were exhumed yesterday.

Syamsul Haris died on 28 July at Hospital Kota Tinggi, Johor, while undergoing training at the Army Combat Training Centre in Ulu Tiram.

He was buried on 29 July at Kampung Rinching Hulu Muslim Cemetery.

Ummu Haiman said she believes her son may have been assaulted and suffered brain and chest injuries.
