Palapes cadet's death: A-GC to study inquest need after receiving probe findings

KOTA BARU: The Attorney-General’s Chambers (A-GC) will consider whether there is a need to hold an inquest into the death of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia Reserve Officers’ Training Unit (Palapes) cadet Syamsul Haris Shamsudin.

Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar said this in response to a request from the lawyer representing Syamsul Haris’s family.

He said police investigations into the case are still ongoing, and a full report is expected to be submitted to his office soon.

“Once we receive it, we will discuss and scrutinise all aspects of the case,” he told reporters after launching the Kampung Angkat Madani at Padang Awam Taman Desa Kemumin here today.

Dusuki said the A-GC would only decide on an inquest after reviewing the post-mortem report and ensuring all elements of the investigation have been completed by the police.

“For now, the matter is still under investigation.

“Until we receive the full report and post-mortem findings, no decision will be made,” he said.

He stressed that the approach would be similar to the one taken in the case of Zara Qairina Mahathir, where the A-GC prioritised due process and fairness.

“Our position is clear. We will ensure justice is served, just as in the Zara Qairina case,” he said.

On Aug 29, the lawyer for Syamsul Haris’s family, Datuk Naran Singh, said he had sent a letter to the A-GC requesting an inquest on Aug 19 but had yet to receive a reply.

Syamsul Haris died on July 28 at Hospital Kota Tinggi, Johor, while undergoing training at the Army Combat Training Centre (PULADA) in Ulu Tiram.
