PETALING JAYA:

The flood situation in Perak continues to worsen, with 2,171 flood victims from 759 families evacuated to 22 temporary relief centres as of 8am today.

The Perak state disaster management committee said 19 temporary relief centres in the Larut, Matang and Selama district in Taiping are now sheltering 1,784 residents.

Three temporary relief centres in the Manjung district are housing 387 residents.

Continuous heavy rain since yesterday morning has caused several areas in both districts to be flooded.

Rescue and aid operations are being carried out by the police, fire and rescue department, civil defence force and social welfare department.

Meanwhile, the meteorological department has forecast rain and thunderstorms this morning in the Larut, Matang and Selama, Kerian, Manjung, Perak Tengah, Bagan Datuk and Hilir Perak districts.

Three rivers – Kolam Bukit Merah, Sungai Kampar and Sungai Slim – are at dangerous levels.
