Over 1,200 Sedition Act investigations opened since 2010, says Saifuddin


KUALA LUMPUR: Police opened 1,222 investigation papers under the Sedition Act 1948 between 2010 and 2025, with 130 individuals charged in court during the same period.

Home Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said 2025 recorded the highest number of investigation papers opened, with 142 cases, while 12 individuals were charged that year.

“The number of investigation papers opened were: 21 in 2010, 44 in 2011, 35 in 2012, 37 in 2013, 121 in 2014, 109 in 2015, 80 in 2016, 47 in 2017, 61 in 2018, 47 in 2019, 117 in 2020, 88 in 2021, 52 in 2022, 125 in 2023, 96 in 2024 and 142 in 2025.

“The number of individuals charged were: none in 2010, four in 2011, 25 in 2012, none in 2013, 12 in 2014, eight in 2015, four in 2016, four in 2017, five in 2018, six in 2019, 29 in 2020, 14 in 2021, 10 in 2022, 12 in 2023, eight in 2024 and 12 in 2025,” he said in a written parliamentary reply.

Saifuddin said the Home Affairs Ministry, through the police, would continue to enforce the law professionally and firmly, without compromise, against any individual who deliberately stirs issues that could threaten public order or national security.

He was responding to a question from Wong Shu Qi of Pakatan Harapan (PH–Kluang) on the number of cases investigated and prosecuted under the Sedition Act from 2009 to January this year.

However, Saifuddin said statistics for 2009 could not be provided as the police had yet to compile the data.
