PETALING JAYA:

The organiser of Friday’s flotilla convoy on Sungai has apologised for raising the Israeli flag during the event.

The event’s director, Khairul Hafiz Hassan, said he was ready to cooperate with the authorities in their investigation.

“I sincerely apologise if anyone has misunderstood the intent of the performance.

“I take full responsibility for organising this programme,” Khairul said in a video posted on TikTok last night.

The post has since been viewed by more than 123,000 people and received nearly 600 comments.

More than 1,000 boats took part in the 8km convoy on Sungai in support of Palestine last Friday.

There was at least one boat with Israeli flags being flown, with passengers acting as Israeli forces with “detainees” on the boat.

Earlier, the organisers of the convoy said this was merely a re-enactment and simulation of what happened to the participants of the Global Sumud Flotilla.

Khairul said the organisers had no intention to glorify Israel, adding that they only wanted to give those attending an accurate re-enactment of the situation faced by participants of the humanitarian mission.

He believed none of the over-10,000 visitors saw an issue with this as they understood the message that was being conveyed and urged others against sensationalising this.

police chief Yusoff Mamat said the incident is being investigated under Section 3(1) of the National Emblems (Control of Display) Act 1949, with police set to summon the event organisers for questioning.
