KUALA LUMPUR: The opposition failed its attempt to refer Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to the Parliamentary Rights and Privileges Committee for misleading the house.
Perikatan Nasional chief whip Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul had rejected the motion submitted on July 24 on the Royal Commission of Inquiry into the Batu Puteh issue.
Takiyuddin said the motion was rejected on the basis that it was tied to the RCI’s recommendations.
“This is despite the fact that the RCI never said Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was guilty.
“The RCI actually recommended that an investigation be launched,” he told reporters at the Parliament building’s entrace today.
On July 22, Anwar said the cabinet decided not to take action against the former prime minister over the Batu Puteh issue due to his advanced age.
He said the government maintained that Dr Mahathir was at fault for withdrawing Malaysia’s claim over the island in 2018.
Takiyuddin said Anwar should file a police report to allow for a proper investigation and leave the matter to the attorney-general.
“Instead, he’s taking on the roles of the police, the attorney-general and the courts. He’s acting like the judge.”
