Nuraini secures historic medal at Para-cycling worlds

KUALA LUMPUR: National cyclist Nuraini Muhamad Shukri gave Malaysia the perfect gift ahead of Merdeka day celebrations after claiming a historic bronze medal at the UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships in Belgium yesterday (Aug 29).

The 30-year-old clocked 26 minutes and 7.99 seconds to place third in the women’s C1 time trial event (11.6 kilometres) in Ronse.

Australian Tahlia Clayton-Goodie took the gold on 19:34.82s while Brazil’s Victoria Maria de Camargo Barbosa (24:42.97s) claimed silver.

The C1 category is for riders who have severe impairments but are still able to race a standard bike.

National para-cycling coach Sallehudin Mohd Noh said it was a proud moment for Malaysian cycling.

“This is the first time that a (Malaysian) para-cyclist has won a medal in women’s road cycling at the World Championships,” said Sallehudin today.

“Though Nuraini competed at the Asian Championships in Thailand earlier this year, she has never raced at the world meet before.

“We just asked her to remain focused on her own performance.”

Nuraini had won two gold medals – C1 road race and time trial – at the Asian Championships in Thailand in February.

Team manager Fuzaimi Shamsudin added that Nuraini’s achievement bodes well for the future of Malaysian para cycling.

It is the second time a Malaysian para cyclist has won a medal in road cycling at the world level. Yusof Hafizi claimed bronze (men’s C1 time trial) at the UCI World Cup leg in Adelaide last year.
