Nothing has raised US$200 million (~RM838,100,000) and says it will be using the funds to usher in a new generation of “AI-native” devices. This “AI OS” will offer a “significantly different” OS experience, capable of powering various other devices in the future, all the while delivering a “hyper-personalised experience”.
Despite these promises, Nothing claims that the “AI-native platform” will run on hardware that is already in widespread use today. The company wants to use the operating system on both mainstream devices like smartphones, smartwatches, and headphones as well as more unconventional ones like smart glasses, electric vehicles, and even humanoid robots.
In a press release, Nothing CEO Carl Pei stated that Nothing is “building the foundation for the future” with the help of the “AI OS”. He also predicts that the new OS will run “whatever comes next”. Pei also shared that the company is valued at US$1.3 billion (~RM5.45 billion), something that the company will leverage to help bring his AI-centric vision to life.
Nothing aims to release its first AI-native device sometime in the next year. However, if you recall the Rabbit R1 and Humane’s AI pin, you’d know that the market does not have a serious appetite for AI-centric systems. Furthermore, AI is now a hotly contested buzzword more so than ever, with any and all tech companies trying to be the market leader. Having said that, the AI landscape has completely changed since then, and there is still a chance for the company’s AI OS to find a space in the market yet.
Regardless of the state of AI-centric devices, Nothing claims that it is uniquely positioned to create these devices. Pei then mentioned that “An AI OS that doesn’t know its user and isn’t ever-present can’t deliver a hyper-personalised experience. This is the next chapter for Nothing, integrating an AI experience into our hardware devices to reinvent how technology amplifies us.” This perhaps suggests that the AI OS will do its best to keep track of its users to deliver a more targeted and unique experience for a specific user.
