KUALA LUMPUR: The Defence Ministry (Mindef) has confirmed that no Malaysian Armed Forces officers are currently stationed in Sudan under United Nations (UN) missions.
This follows renewed clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in El Fasher.
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the ministry is closely monitoring the latest developments in the conflict-torn region.
“At present, no Malaysian military officers are serving in Sudan under any UN mission,” he said in a statement on Wednesday (Nov 5).
He added that two Malaysian military observers who had been deployed under the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei (Unisfa) had completed their one-year assignments in September and November, respectively.
“Both officers have safely returned to Malaysia and have reported for new assignments,” he added.
Khaled said the previous deployment of Malaysian officers was in Abyei, a disputed area along the Sudan-South Sudan border, located about 815km from El Fasher.
“Malaysia remains committed to supporting global peacekeeping efforts through the deployment of military observers under the UN banner when circumstances permit,” he said.
He added that the UN is expected to continue assessing the security situation in Sudan to ensure all missions are carried out in stable and safe conditions, in line with efforts to promote peace and regional stability.
