KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 7 (Bernama) — No Malaysians have been reported affected by Typhoon Kalmaegi which swept through the Philippines and caused widespread flooding and casualties earlier this week, Malaysia’s Foreign Ministry said.
In a statement, the ministry said the Embassy of Malaysia in Manila is closely monitoring the situation ahead of Tropical Storm Fung-Wong (locally known as Uwan), which is expected to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Friday.
“To date, there have been no reports of Malaysians affected by the calamities.
“Malaysians residing in affected areas are advised to remain vigilant and adhere to the latest guidance issued by local authorities,” the statement read.
Tropical Storm Fung-Wong currently carries maximum sustained winds of 75 kilometres per hour (km/h) near its centre and gusts of up to 90 km/h, while moving northwest at 10 km/h.
The state weather bureau has maintained its forecast that the storm may reach the super typhoon category by Saturday (Nov 8) and begin closing in on the country, with adverse weather conditions expected to set in fully by Sunday (Nov 9).
On Nov 4, Typhoon Kalmaegi (locally known as Typhoon Tino) made landfall in the Visayas region of the Philippines, causing widespread flooding, casualties, injuries, and the displacement of hundreds of families.
On Thursday, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. declared a national state of emergency following the extensive destruction caused by Typhoon Kalmaegi, which has killed 114 people and left 127 missing, according to the latest figures.
This measure will enable government agencies to access emergency funds more rapidly and expedite the procurement of relief supplies as the nation prepares for Fung-Wong.
The Malaysian Foreign Ministry extends its deepest condolences and sympathies to the Government and people of the Philippines, especially to the victims and families affected by the calamity.
