KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 16 (Bernama) — No fatalities were reported after a road accident involving 12 Malaysians in Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu, India, on the evening of Sept 14, the Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Tuesday.

“Several individuals in the group sustained minor injuries, and four others sustained heavy but not life-threatening injuries. All are receiving treatment at local hospitals,” said the ministry, widely known as Wisma Putra, in a statement issued on Tuesday.

Wisma Putra said the Consulate General of Malaysia in Chennai is in close contact with the relevant local authorities, the injured Malaysians and hospital representatives to extend necessary consular support.

The Consulate General has also facilitated communication between the affected Malaysians and their next of kin in Malaysia, it added.

The ministry said the incident occurred when a tourist van carrying 12 Malaysians skidded off the road due to hilly terrain conditions.

“The Consulate General took immediate action to contact the local authorities to get the latest information regarding the accident and establish contact with the Malaysian victims.

“All Malaysian passengers were rescued and provided with immediate medical attention,” it said.

The ministry also issued an advisory advising Malaysians travelling in India to exercise caution during the ongoing monsoon season, particularly in hilly areas prone to slippery roads and landslides.

“Travellers are strongly encouraged to register with the nearest Malaysian mission to enable timely assistance during emergencies, and are also encouraged to obtain travel insurance coverage,” it said.

The ministry added that it will continue to monitor developments closely and provide updates as necessary.
